Comic-Con 2011: The Eisner Award Nominations Are In

For those who don't believe that San Diego Comic-Con is still about the comics, don't forget that every year, the convention hands out the Eisners, a slew of the most prestigious awards a comic writerartist/publisher can take home. They're like the Oscars for comic folk unless the guys who run the Harvey awards are in the room, then they're only the Golden Globes for comic folk and taking one home is a true honor.

The nominees for this year have just been announced, with returning favorites and new faces filling up the coveted slots. Leading the way is Mike Mignola, who picked up five nominations for his work on various Hellboy books as well as the graphic adaptation of his novel Baltimore. Also with five nominations is Jim McCann and Janet Lee's Return of the Dapper Men, a graphic fantasy novel with strong ties to surreal fiction like Alice in Wonderland and art reminiscent of Maurice Sendak

Behind them with four nominations are Morning Glories by Nick Spencer and Joe Eisma, and Locke & Key by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez, the latter of which will soon be adapted into a live-action TV show by the brains behind Fringe. Other notable names on the list include Dan Clownes for his recent book Wilson, Terry Moore's Echo, American Vampire penned by Stephen King, G. B. Trudeau, who saw multiple nominations for his classic political comic Doonesbury. The publisher with the most nominations? DC -- sorry Marvel fanboys.
